Fuel Sender, Which way does it fit into tank?

It says in the haynes manual that the terminal points to the front of the tank, but its not too clear. does it mean the sender arm also points to the front of the tank?
Is it critical which way it is fitted? I think mine was fitted wrong in the past but not sure.

The central terminal should point towards the centre of the vehicle; in this position the float arm arc of movement will be across the tank.
