I have a RV version of CF350 with removable rear cover salisbury 8HA. I am trying to put in a new ring and pinion set from land rover salisbury differential. I could not find, if i have to swap over differential unit, because of the different offset of tge ring gear. I noticed that bedford has 22 spline axle but land rover 24 spline. Is it possible to swap over gears from bedford centre to land rover differential centre. I hope someone has been dealing with same kind of challenge and can give some advice.

With ratios for better fuel mileage (3.07:1) the differential carrier changes to accommodate the greater pinion offset. I do not know whether differential side gears with different splines are compatible.

More information in Dana 60 wiki.

NOTE

Standard CF axle is 5HA with 2 differential pinons -

Heavy duty CF axle (CF350L, Code 035) is 8HA with 4 differential pinons -

The rear cover is definetly not round so i assume it is 8ha. So dana60 rear end ring and pinion will fit in this rear end?

I don't know: I've only used GM parts in CF350 axles when CFs were in production.

Best I can remember is that Salisbury axles for Bedford CF and Land Rover were UK build under licence from Dana; some parts are interchangeable but not all.

Tomorrow i will try to swap my 5,22 to land rover 3,45. Info about carrier and pinion shaft bearing preload and gear baclash would be very useful.

Pinion Bearing Pre-load: 2.26 - 3.39 Nm (20 - 30 lbf in.)

Pre-load is obtained by a compressible spacer: progressively tighten pinion nut until required pre-load is obtained. Can be hard to do with used spacer: too easy to exceed pre-load even when additional shim is used to re-compress spacer.

Pinion setting distance in casing is adjusted by shims using a dial gauge and VR2252 setting piece 1.218 inch high for 0 pinion setting mark.

Differential and Hypoid Gear

Side Bearing Pre-load Shim Thickness Allowance: 0.15 mm (0.006 in.)
Side Bearing Adjustment Shim Thicknesses available: 0.003, 0.005, 0.010 and 0.030 in.

Side bearing pre-load is obtained by shim selection calculated to allow for backlash.

Axle casing should be spread using VR1091/A or similar when removing and installing differential assembly.

(5HA axle shown: for 8HA the tool outer location dowels are used.)

Thrust nut is extended as far as possible by hand only then turned half a turn maximum to avoid over-stretching the casing. The problem is that I cannot remember the thread pitch for the thrust screw. :(

Hypoid Gear and Pinion Backlash: 0.18 - 0.25 mm (0.007 - 0.010 in.)
Permissible Run-out of Hypoid Gear: 0.127 mm (0.005 in.) maximum
Torque to Turn Pinion and Differential: 4.6 - 6.5 Nm (40 - 50 lbf in.)

Full procedure is in GM Service Training Manual TS1234 Group 04 Rear axle and rear suspension, available as PDF from the club Reference Library to Subscribing Members.

Thanks Phil for your help. I have successfully installed 3,54 in my 78' CF350 camper van. I had to change the spider gears from bedford diff centre to land rover diff centre. Land rover has 24 spline and bedford 22 spline axles. 3,54 carrier is also differnet so i had to use land rover carrier. It is very nice to finally have normal gearing, because my gearbkx is zf with 5 speed and final gear 1.00. Engine is swapped to opel omega 2,3 TD. So it is very nice gearing setup now. Only problem is my speedo error now, because of the gearing difference coefficient 1.44.

Speedometer reduction drive adaptor may be the simplest solution if you can find an adaptor for ZF.
