Hi, Ross again. Having killed a battery I find the new battery is not charging, alternator has been doused many times with oil through the gasket issue I had so assuming it too has given up, may I just ask-is it 18 ACR I need please?
Thank you and hope all well.

Check the alternator output by connecting a Voltmeter across the battery terminals.
When the engine is running at a fast idle or above the meter should indicate about 14.5V when the battery is well charged to start with.

Lucas alternators have a black plastic rear cover. 17ACR units are standard on all but early models with 1598cc petrol engine.
Alternative is the Delco DN460 (all alloy casings).
