Charging irregularly

We have a recurring charging problem which we'd like to get some new inputs in to. The problem is simply that it sometimes charge and sometimes not. We have measured the alternator: all fine. The cables: all fine as well. We had one clue from a garage in France that said that if the battery is in poor condition these things can happen. That could be true for us, but we'd also like to have some other views on the subject. What could cause this faulty charging? We've gone through all the basic things and everything is fine. The battery as I mentioned has been in poor condition. I've just never heard of anything like that, that the battery could cause a charging problem. Any comments?

A battery that is in poor condition will not charge properly.

If the battery terminal voltage rises rapidly to about 14.5V when the engine is running then the alternator will respond by reducing output to trickle charge rate of about 8A, or less if the battery is in very poor condition and has a relatively high internal resistance.
